ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The Society was founded in Paris in 1833 by Blessed Frederic Ozanam and his companions under the spiritual guidance of Blessed Rosalie Rendu and St. Louise de Marillac.  It is an organization of Catholic laypersons dedicated to helping those around us in misfortune.  Today, the Society has conferences around the world operated by over 800,000 members, including 60,000 in the United States. The Conference of St. Mary’s in Joplin, Mo has been active for most of the parish’s history beginning in 1939. The Conference was reorganized in late 2003 to take on a larger role as a community assistance organization. Today The Conference of St. Mary’s has 18 active members and is supported by over 100 supporting members.  The Society is financially supported by St. Mary’s Catholic Church parishioners.
